DEA’s Take Back Day

Making an Impact Nationwide

During my contract with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for their annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day campaign, I led a dynamic social media strategy to enhance public engagement and awareness. My responsibilities included sourcing effective hashtags to maximize visibility, drafting compelling social media copy to educate the public about safe disposal practices, and providing essential location information for drop-off sites.

By analyzing trends and leveraging data analytics, I curated impactful hashtags that amplified the campaign’s reach. The crafted social media posts were designed to inform the public about the dangers of unused prescription drugs, how to dispose of them safely, and the benefits of participating in Take Back Day. Additionally, I coordinated geo-targeted posts with interactive maps, ensuring communities could easily find local drop-off points.

Through this campaign, we helped facilitate significant participation and results. In April 2021, with the involvement of 4,425 law enforcement agencies and 5,060 collection sites, we secured 839,543 pounds (420 tons) of unneeded medications. In October 2021, 4,276 law enforcement agencies and 4,982 collection sites helped collect 744,082 pounds (372 tons) of prescription drugs. These efforts played a crucial role in the DEA’s mission to remove prescription drugs from the streets, reducing abuse risk and enhancing public safety. The successful social media campaign significantly increased awareness and participation, highlighting the importance of responsible prescription drug disposal.
